European elderberry (Sambucus Nigra L.) is one of the oldest plants used in medicine. It was said to have many miraculous qualities. Interest in the plant was noted already in the Stone Age, as evidenced by numerous excavations. It was also known in the ancient times. In the Germanic culture it belonged to the sacred grove of trees and was considered a “tree of life”.
Its beneficial effects on the human body and skin come from numerous valuable elements, starting with essential oils, but also vitamins A, B1, B2, large amount of vitamin C, calcium, potassium, sodium, iron, fruit acids and tannins. Its flowers and fruit are usually used as raw material.
The fruit of elderberry contain tannins, pectin, vitamins A, C, B1 and B2, anthocyanins (natural pigments), carotenoids, iron, potassium, sodium, calcium, essential oil and alpha hydroxy acids (i.a. malic and citric acids). In the flowers we can find flavonoids (e.g. Rutin), organic acids, essential oil, tannins, saponins, compounds of triterpene acids, polyphenols (which prevent the degradation of collagen) and minerals.
